Year 11 Game Development Project

Ryan Sumner —

The Year 11 Digital Technology students have been working on their Game Development Project since the middle of Term 2.

The project aims to give students the creative freedom to make something that they themselves have envisioned, and showcase their hard work to the Newlands Community.

This involves students going through all of the steps of design and development while involving their end users: the Students of Newlands Intermediate.

In Term 2, the 11TCD classes participated in a GameJam with the Intermediate Students where they collaboratively came up with a number of possible Game Concepts that could be further refined as their own.

After refining their ideas the students presented their Game Pitches to the Intermediate Students to see if the ideas were worth developing further or needed a few tweaks.

Now in Term 3 the Intermediate students are eager to see the progress that has been made to the games that were pitched to them. The first playtesting session in Week 4 has concluded with Intermediate students having seen under the hood of what has been made thus far. While some projects were coming together nicely, others needed more time before they were ready. Regardless of the state that the games were at, there were plenty of development stories to share and feedback to give.

In the subsequent weeks the Intermediate Students will return biweekly, eager to see how those games have improved over time using the feedback that was given prior.

All this hard work will culminate on GAME DAY - Wednesday 23rd October where all the students' work will be on display to be played and enjoyed by the Newlands Community, with the Intermediate students voting on who has made the Best Game of 2024.
