Jumping to Great Heights

Eva Gupta - Room 15 —

It was finally athletics day - loud, crowded and warm.

At the highjump, everyone thought it was so high. When we ran up most people landed on the elastic because it was too high and no one could jump over it. It was even harder to make it using the scissor kick.

Mr Henderson told us there was another way to jump. One of the year 10 students from Newlands College, Elyse, showed us how to arch ours back and bend our elbows and jump over backwards. This jumping style is called the Fosbury Flop. The year 8 girls that made it to the final round used this move.

It was scary doing it this way because you had to jump over backwards and be at the right angle. You had to know which side to run from too, so if you were right handed you would usually go to the right. This did not work for everyone though because some of the girls could jump higher from the other side. We just had to try it out.

There were 2 set ups. One was a stretchy elastic one and everyone had to start with this one first. If you made it over then you got asked to try the mental bar. I just did the elastic one. The photo of Carly, Billie, Rae and Paige shows the year 8 girls that made it over for our group.

Overall, athletics day was really fun and we all enjoyed it.
