The pollinators that are the bees knees!

This week at Newlands Intermediate we have started up beekeeping again. There are heaps of new people as well as a few people from last year. Our bees are a great way for students at our school to learn about Education for Sustainability (E4S), and that’s why our school beekeepers, or kaitiaki pī, are part of the E4S Warriors Team at school. Together we help teach about the importance of taking action to protect the environment and especially how important bees are in the natural world.

Within the next week we will be taking the extra honey out of the hives, starting with a weekend in March (12 - 13th). We now have 3 hives and they are each 6 boxes high, with 8 to 10 frames in each. Not surprisingly, we have a lot of honey to harvest! Our bees love where they live at our school, in our bee friendly garden. They are healthy and doing well and if we care for them properly, there should be even more honey next year! So stay tuned, because soon our own jars of honey will be available for sale to our school community to help us fundraise. With honey we give to the community and the money we get for each jar, comes back to help the school. A pretty sweet deal!
