Moemoeā Rogaining at the Wellington Botanical Gardens

Afnaan Zewada —

As part of an inquiry into navigation, Moemoeā got to put their map reading skills into action.

“So, where exactly are we?” It was the tenth time I’d asked the same question and we were only halfway through the event. “I have no idea, this map is so hard to read.” I could tell Paige was as frustrated as me because she was shaking the map in her hand staring at it like it just turned into Hitler.

“Well at least we are having fun, lost or not” I tried to act cheerful, it wasn’t easy. “I can put some music on my phone, we’ll just chill like we are not lost in the middle of the botanic garden looking for a bunch of clues and landmarks.” Okay, Amanda is definitely better at being cheerful.

Rogaining is a sport were you are in a team with a clue sheet and a map with numbers. You must visit as many controls as you can in an allocated time. Every clue you find and get right will give you points. The team with the most points at the end wins.

“What do you think is the nearest clue?” I asked “let me see… oh it’s 41.” Paige peered at the map closely, “yep, that’s it because we're next the rose gardens."

“What is the number 41 clue on the paper?” Amanda asked me “it says; catch this spirit as a something leaf?”

Little did I know, after an hour and a half of getting lost, rogaining was hard!

My team got 310 points, it wasn’t much compared to the team that go eight hundred and something points. But I didn’t really mind because we still had plenty of fun.

Moemoeā rounded off the day with a curiosity hunt in the Bolton St Cemetery, learning about our local history.
