The 2022 Tech programme

Principal NIS —

Our Tech programme is the highlight of their intermediate experience for many of our students.

Our tech programme is much loved. It is probably the major point of difference between primary and intermediate schooling and the one thing year 7 students can’t wait to try.

We have 4 programmes running in our tech curriculum. We would have more, but we are short of space! Food Technology, Visual Art, Materials Technology, and Textiles are the 4 areas this year. In recent years we have included Digital technology and Design, but we are integrating this across the school this year in a team-teaching model.

Every class takes part in technology for a couple of days each term.

These programmes are large users of consumables.

Food Technology has certainly changed over the years as we ensure there is something for everyone. We cater for gluten free, dairy free, vegetarian and halaal. We also make every effort to incorporate and celebrate the food of the many ethnicities within our school.

Materials technology is certainly requiring some creativity from both Mr Wilson and the students at the moment. Like all users of building supplies and construction materials, sourcing all we need is a challenge. Finding and using recycled materials is a strength of Mr Wilson!

Textiles is a new programme we have introduced this year. We are so impressed with the effort and then delight our students are showing in this area. The concentration of our students as they thread the needle and sew in a straight line is something to behold.

Visual Art has begun with one of favourite media – clay. We have a kiln at school and there is an option to ‘bake’ the students’ artefacts. There is something very soothing about clay and the engagement levels are high in our art room.

Over the next few weeks, you will receive an invoice for the fees and donations for this year. Tech fees are $70 this year as we try to sustain the high quality and high volume of materials each area needs. Please support this very successful and very popular programme.
