Bird Feeders by Nga Kākano
Last term in Ngā Kākano, we were learning about collaboration and working in pairs. Mrs Cooper put us into pairs, and got us to design a bird feeder. We did research on different bird feeder designs. Once we found one we liked, we planned it out on paper. Next, we made a prototype out of cardboard. We found that cutting cardboard was hard because we had to wait for the glue to dry, and sometimes it wouldn’t stick in the right place. However, cardboard was good because it gave us the chance to test how our design would look and if it would work. If our design didn’t work we could change it without wasting wood.
On Monday afternoons, we would go to the hard tech room to create our bird feeders. We decided to recycle some old pellets into our bird feeders. We had to measure and mark the wood before we got to cut it. To cut the wood we learnt how to use the hand saws rather than the machines. If it got too hard to cut, we could then use the machines or get Mr Wilson to help us. We used screws, nails, glue, hammers, and drills to put the pieces of wood to assemble a bird feeder.
When we have finished our bird feeders we are going to give them to the school, so that we can help the environment and attract birds to the school. We will put them up high so that predators can’t get to the birds.
