Supporting Our Local Marae
Year 13 drama students are welcomed onto Ngā Hau E Whā o Paparārangi.
On the 11th of May a group of our students, including myself, went up to the marae, Ngā Hau E Whā o Paparārangi . We went up to support the marae with a whakatau, for the year 13 drama class from Newlands College.
Before anyone had arrived we had to help prepare the food. We welcomed them with a haka pōwhiri and then Matua Joe introduced himself and the marae. Following Matua Joe’s whaikōrero, we sung Hutia te Rito to back up Matua Joe. A male college student then spoke on behalf of their group and told us about their kaupapa and what they were planning to do.
Everyone did fist bumps in replacement of doing hongi. The manuhiri then sat down and started eating their food. When we had got some food to eat, we left and ate on the way back to school.
It was quite fun to be there and see everybody.
