MiniHack and Life is a Game

Creative problem solving in action.

Last week, all of Tūmanako (P1, P2, P3 & P4) were able to experience the first HackMini and “Life is a Game”. Both of these lasted 2 days.

HackMini is where we pitch an idea on how to fix a problem to the teachers and whoever had a good pitch would be able to pitch it to Ms. Lowe.

The syndicate was split into 2 classes. P1 and P2 in one group and P3 and P4 in another.

I got to do HackMini first with Jack Saunders and Rowan Martin-Bond. Our problem was how the water from drinking fountains were warm on hot days.

We figured out a solution by making it so that you can choose between normal water and colder water. However this design didn’t make it through.

There were 2 winners and 2 honourable mentions.

Next thing I did was Life is a Game. We were told that we had to make a game. Whether it was outdoors, indoors or online. I did this project with Simon Press and Tavake Taufa. The game we made was an outdoor game that fuses McKenzie Ball with Basketball. The four categories for winners were: Best Outdoor, Best Board Game, Best Digital Game, and Best Video/Presentation. I don’t remember everyone who won, but the group who won Best Digital Game was Emile Brosnahan and Jacob Hopfler.

Nevertheless, MiniHack and Life is a Game are new great experiences that I hope everyone tries out. We usually don’t get to pitch any ideas or get to make any type of game, so it was good that we were able to do so.
