Bird of the Year

Principal NIS —

What began as my way of supporting NZ Forest and Bird has turned into an annual event at our school.

Before term 3 gets underway the student leaders from each class pick a name of a seriously endangered bird from 'the hat'.

The task ahead is to share interesting information about the bird, present the findings in engaging and diverse ways and raise awareness of the conservation status of their bird.

The variety of the presentations, the depth of knowledge and the engagement of our students in "Mrs Lowe's project" grows every year.

I visit each class and watch videos, plays, hear stories, look at displays, eat cakes and biscuits decorated as birds, admire art work, and arts and crafts, and learn so much about our endangered birds. My office is currently filled with bird souvenirs.

This year saw a shift from not just presenting the facts, but working towards solutions and ways to help.

This is a highlight of my year! Thank you everyone for indulging me! The winning class will be announced at the final assembly.

Next year we will upload all our learning onto a webpage and invite NZ Forest and Bird to be part of our celebrations.
