Our Place of Learning
Our classrooms are open, flexible learning spaces where students can choose to use a shared learning area or remain within their own classroom in a more structured learning environment. The shared learning areas provide space for students to work independently or in small groups, with students from their own class and those close by.
Our entire school is wireless and we provide a variety of digital devices in every classroom with e-learning integrated across our curriculum. BYOD (bring your own device) is actively encouraged. Chromebooks have proven to be an effective device for our students’ learning needs.
Our specialist teaching area, Food, Textiles, Hard Materials and Visual Arts, is well resourced and students have access to a wide variety of materials and expertise to design, create and refine technology artefacts. Digital technologies and creative arts have also become integral parts of our specialist teaching programme.
Our school hall is large and used for performing arts, sports and fitness, presentations and assemblies.
The artificial turf is a valuable asset to us and the community. Students are able to play and practise football, rugby, hockey, netball, tennis and train on the 2 lane running track. Our turf is a community facility enjoyed by many groups across the region.
The school library is well resourced and supported by 2 librarians. We maintain a modern, high quality collection of reading material, including sophisticated picture books, graphic novels and e-readers.
Students and teachers are encouraged to be environmentalists at Newlands Intermediate. We are beekeepers and collectors of honey. We maintain an organic herb and vegetable garden, an orchard, compost, recycle, sustain a worm farm, care for a section of a local stream environment and generate electricity through our solar panels. We are committed to developing a healthy environment for everyone.
We have developed a mountain bike track through our pine forest and bush areas, and we have a concrete track for bikes and runners on the bottom field. The motivation for this being, if you can’t bike to school, you can bike at school.
