E-Sports at Newlands Intermediate

Jared Simons —

Last year, there was a notice asking for girls who like to game to go to the digi room at lunch. Out of the twenty odd who came, only ten stayed long enough to compete in the Girls’ eSports competition.

We made games, overcoming challenges along the way, and eventually we shared our games to the other teams from across Australia. We then had the chance to play each other’s games and then vote on our favourite that we would most like to play! Fun fact, we were the only New Zealand team competing in the tournament.

Out of the roughly 14 teams that competed, one of our teams won and is now going to compete with one of the teams from Australia which they tied with.

The four games we made were:

  • Killer Cows- the winning team! In their game, you have to escape the massive maze while being hunted by the Killer Cow! If it catches you, you die!

  • Crafty Ants- An escape room, but you’re and ant, or everything is massive. Follow the clues around the room before working out how to open the door and get out! The fastest time wins!

  • SNEW- Another maze, but this time you collect items throughout it and place them in the item frames to win.

  • The Magical Hunt- this game was made on COG. It’s a scavenger hunt around a magical island. Collect all the items in the fastest time to win.

Three out of the four games were made on Minecraft and the other one was made on Newlands Intermediate metaverse world, COG.

At the start of 2023, we had a celebratory party for last year's victory in E-Sports. We had cupcakes and got our (well deserved) Minecraft Agent plushies. All of us are doing E-Sports again this year.

We are all busy polishing up Killer Cows because it will be played in an inter-school competition this spring.
