Te Ao Mārama Chess Ladder

Billy Miskimmin and Alina Mai —

‘Check’ your ‘Mates’ and move up the ladder

This term, Te Ao Mārama has been enjoying our new Chess Ladder that is on display in our Shared Learning Area. This came as a response to the growing interest in chess among our students. The ladder gives students the opportunity to get involved more in chess. They can track their progress and ultimately try to work their way up the rankings by challenging those above them. We have currently over 20 people, students and teachers, on the chess ladder, and that number continues to grow.

Chess can improve the ability to see from other people’s perspective as players need to predict what action their opponents would take. Players practice problem solving while they think of different ways to trap their opponent. Chess brings a lot of people together and has done so for 1500 years.

Big thank you to Jet Smith, Logan Hopfler, and Joshua Ho for building the chess ladder in the Hard Tech room. Also, a big thanks to Taylor Lincoln, Alina Mai, and Finn Love for decoration and design on the chess ladder and wall displays.
