WETA MOTEL
One Block Of Wood Can Go A Long Way
Weta are extraordinary creatures that are endemic to Aotearoa.
Did you know Weta’s can outweigh a mouse, and that traditionally it’s name means “god of ugly things “ Their number is sadly declining due to things like predation and habitat loss. Weta Motels are a great way to help encourage biodiversity in your backyards, and they're extremely fun to make. They are large wooden blocks with entry and viewing holes so you can look inside .
My Dad came up with the idea after coming across lots of bugs in our backyard. It took a lot of hard-work and dedication to get it finished, but it was really fun to help make. My little brother Leo exclaimed “ It was messy in some parts of the time doing it.”Our father ( Mike ) is an absolute master of woodwork, and is a big fan of building stuff in the yard. It was a great experience for us all, and the result was very pleasing.
It took a while for insects to settle in. We still don’t have any Weta’s yet, and it may take months before we see any. Although we’ve found small insects living there like Red Spider Mites, Little Spiders and some Stink Bugs. Making a Weta Motel is a great way to get outdoor’s and spend time with your family. It's important that we all do our part to preserve the beautiful nature in Aotearoa.
