Pollution in the Ocean

Callie Sims —

Did you know there are 5.25 trillion pieces of plastics estimated to be in our oceans?

Ocean pollution is a very big problem. It's widespread and we are creating more pollution , so it's up to us to fix what we have done. There is about 12.7 million tons of plastics that enters our oceans every year which is a lot! Many people don't realise the danger of littering, a small plastic straw can end a turtle's life so just imagine what 50 straws would do. How many turtles would die then? It just takes a little effort to put the straw in the bin, by doing that you might be saving a marine animal's life.

363,762,732.605 pounds which adds up to 66138678.6555 inflatable six foot round swimming pools, is the amount of plastic that is in our ocean. Billions of tonnes of plastics can be found in swirling convergences that make up 40% of the world's oceans' surfaces. 70% of our debris sinks into the oceans ecosystem, 15% floats and 15% lands on our beaches.

Over one million animals including fish, sharks, turtles and birds are killed each year due to plastic debris in the ocean. Our oceans are mostly being polluted by chemicals and trash. Chemicals contain toxins that are harmful to animals, and trash is mistaken as food for animals. It's not just the environment and animals that we are hurting, we are also hurting ourselves. Let me explain how, some people rely mainly on fish for a food source but when a fish swallows a chemical and we eat the fish we get poisoned as well it's the same for plastics.

80,000 tons approximately is the amount of trash in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch which is equal to the weight of 500 jumbo jets. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is 1.6 million square kilometres- an area twice the size of Texas and three times the size of France. In the next 10 years the Great Pacific Garbage Patch could double in size, that's a lot of trash.

I know you can't just expect to clean up the whole ocean and the whole Great pacific garbage patch in one day, but you can stop more trash going into our oceans by recycling properly, putting things in the the bin instead of littering, coming up with ideas to do with pieces of trash and finally reusing things like plastic bags and more.

After reading this hopefully you will realise the danger of littering and pollution. We need to stop pollution it's damaging us, animals, the environment, and the world. So please make a stand and stop polluting our oceans.
