Football Tournament

Jonty Joseph and Enesh Suresh —

Oh man, we're late! We were stuck in a traffic jam feeling frustrated and anxious. Were we going to make it?......

On Tuesday 24 May, the Newlands Boys Football Team participated in an Inter-intermediate Football Tournament at Wakefield Park in Island Bay.  14 year 7 and 8 students went, but 1 was sick and could not make it. 10 of us travelled in the school van and 3 students went with a parent.

Unfortunately, we missed the first game because we were not there on time.  But luckily, Raroa was even later so this first game was counted as a draw.

We versed Tawa and we won 2 nil. Then we played South Wellington Intermediate and we won 6 nil!  This made us in the quarter final because we were the top of our pool.

We went onto play Fergusson Intermediate and we won again! The score was 4 nil. After this, was Maidstone Intermediate and we won 4 - 1!

So now we are in the final.  We had to verse Raroa A team. We were very happy because we made Newlands Intermediate history because we were the first team to ever get past the quarter finals.

We scored first which made us really happy and then through the second half they scored. So after countless counter attacks and defending it was a draw. Then we had to go to golden goal because it was a draw and it was the final.  Whoever scored first would win.

We were feeling even more nervous and excited. So then no one scored in the time allocated so it went to a penalty shoot out. They were given the first shot so we all lined up on the halfway line and the goal keeper was in the goal. They scored. Next we went and we scored. So then they scored again and then we missed! They had to score again to win and all of us were nervous. This was a very powerful shot and it went into the goal keepers left side.

Even though we came second we were still very proud that we made it this far and at the end of the day it was just fun.
