The Science Roadshow Amps Up NIS students

Viane Harrison —

In the second week of September, Newlands Intermediate attended the Science Roadshow.

The Science Roadshow taught us many things like electrical circuits, the water cycle, and cool and interesting facts from the many exhibits. This piece will explain in more detail about our experience.

It was a great learning opportunity for us all.

At the start of the science roadshow, two trained scientists, Ricardo and Esther presented a little show for us. Interestingly, they taught us about electrical circuits. They gave demonstrations of what could power a LED light and what couldn’t. They also showed what the electrical circuits looked like when a light is switched on. After that, they did two cool demonstrations with a Tesla coil and an Electric magnet chair. A Tesla coil is a device that produces high amounts of volts. The one we saw went up to 1,000 volts and powered an LED light. The magnetic chair was a device that was held up by a magnet, and when a button was pressed, the chair was released. Mr Turner was on the chair and when it was released, he got a fright.

We also explored the exhibits around the room. Unsurprisingly, there were a variety of different and delightful ones. One of my personal favourites was, “Bones on a bike”. It was two exercise bikes. One had a skeleton on top and when someone pedalled, the other skeleton copied. A hovercraft was there too. I learned many random and interesting facts from the exhibits.

Overall, the Science roadshow was educational, informative, and fun.
