Celebrating Samoan Language Week

Jesscia Heather, Brylee Anae and Jade Tufele —

On the 1st of June, Whaea Lena and Whaea Tia arranged a special event for our Poly Club to celebrate Samoan Language Week. Everyone brought a dish for our shared meaai (food). The Pasifika kids got to wear their cultural clothes and everyone else got to wear a ie lavalava and a lei from the school Poly Club uniform.

We got to learn some basic sentences in Samoan and created little plays to show off our new learning. Some of the plays were hilarious. We also learnt a little bit about drawing some Samoan patterns called siapo.

We also participated in a variety of activities to celebrate. After that we had a lunch break and played outside. Soon after that we had our shared meaai.

Some of the food we brought was : Chop suey, panekeke, panipopo, raw fish, fried bread, corn beef, taro, some desserts and so much more. All of the food was so delicious,so we decided to invite all the teachers from around the school to taste a bit of our cultural food. In the end we were all full and there was still heaps of leftovers.

We are so grateful to everyone that contributed and a big thanks to Whaea Lena and Whaea Tia for always giving us these cool opportunities to celebrate our culture.
