Invitational Girls Rugby Tournament

On the twenty-first of September, six girls from our school combined with three girls from Raroa and seven girls from Tawa to make the RNT girls' rugby team to compete in the Invitational Girls Rugby Tournament. The tournament was held in Wainuiomata with eight teams participating.

At first, my team was feeling nervous because for most of us it was our first open-grade game of rugby. After a while though, it felt like a normal rugby game. The weather started off cloudy but by the end of the day it started to rain. We had to play our last game in heavy rain and the girls were very dirty by the end of it.

Overall, we did a good job coming fourth out of eight teams and winning a majority of our games. It was a great experience to play in an all-girls rugby tournament, we can’t wait till next year.

Newlands Junior Rugby Club are hoping to spread the word of the mahi happening behind the scenes as we start preparing for the next season and as we head into 2023 we here at NJRC have put our hands up to help to facilitate a U15 girl's composite team.

In 2022 there were four U15 teams-including finals their season consisted of five games. This sadly also means that there were players without a team as their college did not have numbers to field a team. Our vision is with some planning and hard mahi we can help build a team to add to those numbers, while also ensuring any college currently with a team can build their numbers as well. This is going to be a big job, but one we think is worth it.
