Bike Track Opening!

Bikes, here we come!

On Wednesday 26 October, our school had the official bike track opening on the bottom field. It was a nice sunny day and there were 17 classes sitting on the nice grass in the middle of the bike track.

The school's Kapa Haka group were performing and they sang a waiata to begin the opening. Mrs Lowe gave a speech and she said that NZ has a low grade of people doing fitness in general and our bike track is a way to get that percentage up by a little bit.

Over at the blue 40 ft container (which had 34 bikes and 1 teacher bike in it) I was standing with Felix. Last year on Fridays Felix and I stood at Rama’s desk and had a meeting about planning and getting funds for the bike track. It took us over a year to plan. It was a fairly good leadership role last year and this year. It taught me how to apply for grants.

Whaea Lena did a blessing. There was a blue ribbon across the gazebo and after the speech I cut the ribbon with scissors. After that, all the technical team - the students from each class that the teachers chose - did a lap of the bike track.

I have asked a couple of people what they think about having a bike track at the school. Here is what they said “I think it’s good for having fitness for the kids who like to ride bikes”, “It’s really cool and good for opening up new opportunities”, “It means that we can give students a chance to learn bikes and it’s a positive experience for students to learn to ride bikes at our school.”

After the opening, Felix and I went up to the staffroom for a special morning tea. It was cake. It had chocolate bikes on it. I had 2 pieces and it was really nice and lemon flavoured.

Felix and I would like to thank Rama for helping us out with this journey.
