Tough Guy and Gal Challenge

Mud, mayhem, and madness make for a marvellous day!

Waking up at 6:30 in the morning, I knew what day it was today. I filled myself up with a yummy breakfast and started to get ready for the day ahead. I quickly put on some old clothes and hopped straight into the car. I arrived at school at 7:30 and headed to the hall. At 7:50 we caught the bus to Camp Wainui where our adventure started.

It was suddenly 8:30 and we had arrived at our destination. There were so many people waiting for the course to start. Walking around I could see food trucks, music and dancing stage, and the big pond that we would have to walk in at the end.

Suddenly, it was time for us to run the course. I was eager to see what was up ahead. 5,4,3,2,1 and we were off! Starting the track I could already feel that we were going to get very muddy and wet. While running, we came across the first obstacle. Crawling under the cargo net, I felt grossed out by all of the squishy mud and wet grass.

Next came the pig tunnels, a very closed-in space that you had to crawl in. I struggled to climb up the tall fences because people were pushing anyone who was in their way. It was not very pleasant. The most annoying obstacle was next, the barbed wire. Crawling under, I felt my hair getting caught in the wire. I started to feel some regret and wonder why I was doing this. Finishing that horrible obstacle I felt a huge wave of happiness come across my body.

I navigated my way through the slippery mud, trying not to fall, and came across a puddle of deep watery mud. My foot started to sink. Muddy water started to fill my shoe. Pulling it out, I ran to the next part of the course, the forest. It suddenly got a bit dark. I struggled to stay standing. Everywhere I stepped there was mud so my shoes got very slippery. Sliding down the muddy hills was the key, although I slipped a couple of times trying to get up the hill.

I seriously misjudged just how much effort was required to complete this course. We had to go under big posts which had electric wires on them, (luckily they weren’t on so none of us got harmed). After passing these with ease, I stopped suddenly in my tracks. Three big fences were standing at attention in front of us. Everyone was trying to get up the fences so I had to wait. Finally, I managed to climb over them before being confronted by a big mud hill. It smelt like poo but I kept on going.

I thought I wouldn't see any more of the forest but I was wrong. Very wrong. There was a bit more left. Shortly after, I could see the home stretch. The final obstacle was water. Not looking particularly deep, I stepped in. At one point the water was up to my shoulders. Eventually reaching the other side, I dragged myself over the finish line with relief and a great sense of satisfaction.
