Year 10 Training and Performance Excursion - Adelaide University

Jaz Andrae —

On Friday 7 August and Friday 14 August, Year 10 Training & Performance students had the exciting opportunity to visit the elite sports science facilities at the University of Adelaide, accompanied by Mr Gibbs, Miss Andrae, Mr Vanderloo and Mr Mauriello.

Throughout the excursion, students participated in a range of fitness tests and experienced first-hand how performance data is collected and analysed to support elite athletes. Testing included reaction time using reaction light pods, body composition analysis with the BodPod and InBody Body Composition Analyser, speed and agility testing through electronic timing gates, and VO₂ max testing using a state of the art metabolic cart.

The experience gave students valuable insight into careers in exercise physiology and sports science, while also providing a glimpse into the technologies and testing methods used by elite athletes to monitor and enhance their performance.

Students compared their results with elite athlete benchmarks to identify their strengths and areas for improvement, which will inform their next assessment task as they design and evaluate their own training program.

A special mention to Amy Trewartha, Tom Trewartha, Mehan Balamurli, Leandro Saadeh and Ilya DeGroot for bravely taking on the VO₂ max test - one of the toughest fitness assessments of the day!

A big thank you to the University of Adelaide and the SASI Sports Science Hub for providing our students with such an engaging and valuable learning experience.
