Rationale and Recommendations

The digital environment is empowering learners and teachers as never before.

Oaklands School believes that the use of the digital devices will enhance learning opportunities particularly as a way to connect with the world, create new understandings and solutions to problems and communicate learning to others.

Oaklands School integrates digital technologies into its programmes where it makes a difference to the student learning. To enhance this further, students in the Year 4-8 area of the school are given the option of bringing their own device to school.  More information can be found here about digital devices and learning.

Which device is it best to get?

Oaklands School recommends Chromebooks. A Chromebook is a type of laptop that is run on Google's Chrome operating system (OS) instead of Windows or Mac OS. These machines are designed to be used primarily while connected to the Internet, with most applications and documents living in the Cloud. Chromebooks are optimised for Google Apps, such as Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive. This device has been carefully selected, from a range of manufacturers, as being most able to support learning in our school.

Another major factor in recommending Chromebooks is that they fit best with our ICT network and monitoring. When students are learning on their Chromebook, we are able to monitor their internet usage, install apps and extensions that are suitable for learning, and teachers are able to see what is on the student's screen from their own screen.
