Taiheke - Mā mahi ka ora!

Bryan Brown —

Mā mahi ka ora is a maori whakatauki which has a deep and meaningful message of: through hard work you will prosper, this is what we are using this year in Taiheke as our class motto. Here's a bit of an insight as to what we've been up to this week in our learning.

Technology

This week was the first week of Technology at Lincoln Primary, all of the students came back humming about the learning that they were involved in at Lincoln. Here's what some of them had to say:

Stacee Williams - STEAM was really fun! I liked how we were given a choice to choose something from the six options that had for us. I liked using the different materials (string, cardboard, glue, cellotape, paper and much more) to create my wheel.

Cohen Poilly - Woodwork was amazing, we were getting all of our ideas down for what we were going to build and 3D print. I'm going to make a mallet to hammer in nails.

Carys Western - Woodwork was really fun. I liked how they got us to look into the previous designs from before and see how they all came out afterwards.

Zach Looyer - Design and Innovation was fun, we did learning around planning for what we are going to make. I'm going to make a controller holder for my Playstation controller.

Cyber Safety

In Taiheke, we have placed a large emphasis on the students digging deeper into keeping themselves safe online, keeping others safe and being able to respond appropriately to difficult situations that they might find themselves involved in online. All students have taken these lessons seriously and it has prompted a real positive and supportive culture in our hub around cyber safety.

Expectations

This year, the teachers in Taiheke are establishing high expectations around learning, behaviour and attitude, so far, everyone has raised the bar and we intend to keep it that way all year. We're looking to putting learning first and developing a collaborative culture in our hub.

Daily Gratitude

This week, we started our daily gratitude reflection at the end of the day. This is important for our students to complete this daily as an act of appreciation who what has been done for them at home or at school in their day. While we move through the weeks, and even terms, students can start to appreciate all of the things that have been done over time making their year a success.

Restorative Circles

We have placed a huge emphasis on Restorative Circles in our hub, we've been teaching the students about how we can use the different circles everyday to solve the issues, problems and publicly acknowledgement of positives that happen in our hub everyday.

Here's a link to our classroom display which has information that describes the six different circles and what the mean. We use this everyday as a point of reference for the students so they can decide whether they need to use this process. Although students are developing awareness around this, already it is becoming extremely powerful in our hub as a tool to move forward through these difficult times.

Thank You from the Teachers!

We would like to personally thank the students in our hub for trying their best in the new normal that we find ourselves in....

- Wearing masks

- Sanitising religiously to keep ourselves safe.

-Dealing with the breezes that push our paper around the hub.

-Working with the hot and the cold wind that rushes through the windows.

- Keeping our hygiene up and respecting everyone's personal space.

With all this in mind, even though we can't see your smiles and we might not always be able to hear your words....we can now see the happiness through your eyes!

Timetable for next week

The timetable for next week is attached in the photos. Next week we start our learning around Statistical Investigations for Mathematics. We will also be assessing students in their writing to see where they are on the punctuation ladder. We will also be looking into our first Current Events for the year, we've given this a 'New Zealand taste', looking at events that have shaped and changed New Zealand. Next week we will look at the Napier Earthquake.
