"NRICH" Maths activities

Phillippa Stevens —

On a Friday, some of the maths groups participate in a rich maths programme.

The children are given a task and must work in groups to solve a practical problem.  One of the tasks was as follows:  "Noah saw 12 legs walk by into the ark.  How many creatures could he have seen?  First the children had to make a representation of the animals, e.g  3 dogs, or 2 birds, and 2 dogs, or 2 insects.  They could be as creative as they liked so long as they ended up with the right number of animals and legs.  After they had agreed on the animals, they drew their ideas, and finally they wrote a number sentence, e.g : 2+2+4+4=12.
