Term 3, Week 2 in Review!
What have we been up to? What is coming up?
Literacy
This week students began Reading in their new groups for the beginning of the term. We have taken inspiration from our local area and named the groups based on native birds that either inhabit, or used to inhabit the area around us. Groups and learning goals can be found on the main wall in our Year 4 Whānau Zone. We have introduced some new comprehension questions into our fortnightly Reading SML Programme.
In Writing we have been looking at Information Reports. Students have either begun, or are about to begin, a report about an insect followed by a report about a native bird. As well as learning about the structure of an information report we are also targeting correct use of punctuation. Many students have enjoyed skimming through articles to highlight key facts for their report. This term we have a focus on surface features of writing such as correct and independent use of capital letters, full stops and other forms of punctuation.
Numeracy
In Numeracy the new groups have finished their first fortnightly SML rotation and many groups will be starting on new learning goals next week. You can see the goals each group is focusing on up on the wall in the Whānau Zone.
After a pre-test last week we began our first Time lesson today. Students are grouped based on the gaps from their test. Some of the topics being covered by different groups are: days/months, telling o'clock/half past on analogue clocks, telling minutes and seconds, 24 hour time, converting digital to analogue and visa versa, telling a range of times on digital and analogue clocks.
Integrated Learning
As we continue with our unit on Identity we have looked at places in New Zealand, places in the South Island and places in Canterbury. We have done lots of fun mapping exercises and are becoming experts and finding places using Google Maps and relating these back to paper maps.
Kauri Assembly on Monday
A group of students are hosting the Kauri Team Assembly on Monday. You will receive an email if your child is presenting.
We are also hosting the School Assembly in Week 6.
