What happens if....
This week we have been looking at what happens if we change something in a science experiment.
We made Lava Lamps today and discussed what we could change and what we thought would happen if we changed something.
We talked about the instructions:
Fill a bottle 3/4 with Oil, and 1/4 with water leaving a 3-4cm gap at the top. Add in a few drops of food colouring and then drop in a broken Alka-Seltzer tablet and put the lid on.
We talked about what we could change and decided to look at the oil and water amounts and alter them. This is what we discovered.
If we switched the amount of oil/water so they were the other way around the bubbles created were smaller and only at the very top of the bottle.
If we made a 50/50 mix of water and oil we found that we had a very quick bubbling reaction and the tablet dissolved a lot faster which stopped the bubbles.
We also made the standard mix in two different sized bottles. The bigger bottle had 'bigger bubbles' and the bubbles travelled up and around like a lava lamp would.
The smaller bottle became like a 'volcano of bubbles' and was very exciting to watch.
But the favourite part of many was when we added glitter and it caused the bubbles to slow right down and almost freeze in place creating a 'shiny, glittery, sparkly and pretty' appearance.
