Term 3, Week 2

Beth Loper —

The second week of term in our Year 2 team!

What a chilly but exciting week it's been!

We started off the week with a special visit from Constable Jess who came into school to discuss road safety with us. We learnt to stop, look, listen, and check twice before we cross the road.

This was a lead up to our trip away from school! We got to practice what Constable Jess had taught us by checking both ways before crossing the road. We checked multiple times and listened out for cars before crossing a road and we also learnt about 'sneaky driveways'.

Thank you to all the whānau who attended learning journeys on Monday and Tuesday. It was lovely to engage with you about your tamariki, their progress, and how lucky we are to have them in our classes. If you have any more questions about your child or their learning please feel free to reach out to their kaitiaki teacher.

Reading:

For reading we have been continuing our Quick 60 literacy programme which has been helping our tamariki learn their high frequency words, sight words, and vowel sounds. Can you please make sure your child is bringing their reading folder to school everyday.

Writing:

We have been starting off our week with an experiment that the children write about for the rest of the week. For Mrs Mclaughlan's writing group we looked at the dispersion of different substances when mixed with water (sand, sugar, and salt). In Miss Gledhill's class we experimented with salt to make salt crystals. In Mrs Falconers writing class we looked at ice, observing ice melting, and how different substances impacts how fast ice melts

Maths:

For maths we have been continuing to look at measurement. Each class will have a chance to learn about volume and capacity, time, length, and temperature over the next couple of weeks.

PE:

We have finally started our gymnastics unit. The tamariki looked at simple moves like a straddle, puck, stretch, and tuck. They also experimented with different moves to create their own gymnastics routine. This will continue for the next few weeks.

Important information:

We will start our exploration programme which is on a Friday afternoon. This is where students choose an activity that they're passionate about (arts, crafts, sport, etc) and get to perform this activity with the teachers of the junior school. Mrs Falconer (P2D) has requested some parent help with her activity - crocheting. This will require you to be available Friday afternoons - no previous skills necessary.

Matific

For 6 weeks we are trialing the Maths programme Matific to see how this programme can support our student's Maths learning.   At the end of the trial we will be seeking feedback from students on their thoughts about the programme. Next week we will be participating in Maths Olympiad.  By participating all students get certificates and a chance to win prizes.  Students will bring a notice home on Friday to explain more about the Maths Olympiad.

Ngā mihi nui, from the Year 2 teachers.
