South West Zone Athletics
This week we celebrate success in the Year 7/8 Hub.
This week saw a large number of Year 7 & 8 students represent Oaklands School at the South West Zones Athletics Competition which was held at Hillmorton High School. The weather turned on a stunner and so did our group of athletes.
In keeping with our motto for the year, all of the students got involved and made a difference. It was great to see them competing fiercely and providing enthusiastic support for each other during the course of the day.
Thoughts on the day from:
Sam I: It was a fun and successful event. I enjoyed competing and winning my sprint race.
Ella: The event was a very exciting experience. My favourite part was winning two ribbons for long distance and high jump. I look forward to going to Canterbury's with lots of other Oaklands students.
Zara: Zones was a very fun experience although I have done it twice before. It was fun having more than one events and I feel I did better this year. I can’t wait for next year.
We achieved some outstanding results.
Many of our group have now qualified to represent the zone at the Canterbury Athletics Champs. This event is due to be held at the shiny new Nga Puna Wai Outdoor Sports Hub on Wednesday 5th December. This in itself is a win for us as travel time is now only about ten minutes, compared to other years when we have had to travel to Ashburton Domain for this event.
Athletes qualifying for the Canterbury Champs after top 3 placings in their events are:
Amber Moates - 2nd Discuss and 3rd Shot Put
Ella Wilson - 3rd Long Distance and 3rd High Jump
Alexia Mackenzie - 1st High Jump and 2nd Long Jump
