Week 5 Term 3 In Review

Matthew Reed —

Check out what’s been happening in Hub 4 this week.

Hub 4 would like to welcome our Student Teacher Mr Connor Hines who will be spending the next 5 weeks with us.

Literacy

In Miss B’s Literacy class this week we have taken a look at onomatopoeia in action. We first looked at what onomatopoeia was and how it can be used in our writing. We also explored different poems that have used this. The students then looked at how onomatopoeia is used to show action by presenting it in a picture form. This is where we took a journey back in time to the 1960’s and the TV series, Batman where onomatopoeia was used to show sound effects. The students had a whole lot of fun using onomatopoeia creatively. Next week they will create an onomatopoeia poem using some of these words. Check out some of the examples below.

In Mr Sy’s Literacy class we have been working on mastering vowels and consonants. This week we also learned about the long vowel sounds of “A” and “I”.

The Quick Words that we practised this week were:

of/ these/ they/ what/ do/ with/ some

In Mr Reed’s Literacy class this week we have wrapped up our work with poetry by publishing our work in poster form. See the many examples of these poems below.

Maths

In Miss B’s Maths class this week we have looked at changing the order of equations to make solving multiplication problems easier. We also looked at multiplying by 10’s, 100’s, 1000’s and other multiples of 10. The students are also focusing on learning the timetables they do not know as yet. They will be doing this through working with a buddy, completing different practice exercises and activities and the use of multiplication and division games.

In Mr Sy’s Maths class we had our second week of Number Talks session. The challenges this week got trickier, but the groups did really well in collaborating to solve the problems.

In Mr Reed’s Maths class this week we have been improving our number sequencing by counting backwards in 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, 10’s and 100’s from 1,000. We have also been extending our knowledge of grouping with “Splat” with the introduction of many different splats. Thus, requiring us to equal group the missing numbers.

Students will be grouped by the tutors according to their level of swimming skills so they can get the best benefit from the tuition. They will be working in groups of up to 7 students.

We are in the process of finalising our numbers for swimming at the end of the term. If your child will not be participating in these lessons could you please let your child’s whānau class teacher know as soon as possible. If your child is taking part, payment for these lessons needs to be paid to the office.

Below are the times each whānau class will be swimming.
