Week 1 Term 4 In Review
Check out what’s been happening this week in the Year 4 Hub
Welcome back everyone to the last term of 2018. We have a lot of different opportunities for students this term to explore, discover and create. I would also like to welcome our student teacher, Miss Ta’apega Solofuti who will be in our hub for the next 4 weeks.
Integrated Learning
We kicked off our Integrated Learning for Term 4 with the students looking at and exploring the evolution of music and dance. This week we focused on dance, with the students learning about the salsa, traditional dance – waltz and the Samoan Sasa and the barn dance with a bit of hop hop. This experience also allowed the students to learn and participate in three different dances.
Next week we look at the evolution of music with a closer look at three different types of music and musicians. From here, the students will be exploring rock in roll music and dance as well as this era in our history, with our finale a performance of highlights from the movie Grease at our school gala concert.
Literacy
In Literacy, this term we are focusing on persuasive writing and persuasive arguments where the students will be looking at debating. They will learn how to argue a view point supported by evidence to back up their thinking. They will also explore different examples of persuasive writing as part of our Reading programme.
Maths
Our focus for Maths this term is on proportions and ratios (fractions, decimals & percentages) as well as looking at ‘time’ – how to read and tell time. We will also be continuing with our problem-solving programme.
In the coming weeks, the students will also be completing the Maths PAT and numeracy basic facts tests. This data will add to the information we will send through to their next year’s teachers.
PE
In PE, this term our focus has been on developing the students’ athletics skills specifically looking at long jump, high jump, shotput and discus. For our Year 4 students, our Kauri athletic sports next week is a chance for them to experience an athletics sports and to practice their newly acquired skills. Selection for the South West Zone Athletics is only open to Year 5-8 students. So, they can look forward to this opportunity next year.
The students will be moving around from activity to activity in their year level, with the girls split into two groups due to the large number of them. It is important that students have their hats for this activity as it will be very hot outside. They will also need a drink bottle with water as they will need to keep hydrated.
Community Problem Solvers
These amazing students from Oaklands School just made it to the finals of the Community Problem Solving competition being held in Auckland 2 - 4 November. This is an amazing achievement, especially as it is our first year competing in this international competition. Congratulations to Max and Isis who were part of this team. What an awesome achievement!
House Keeping
Hats
Hats are compulsory in Term 1 & 4. The sun is getting hotter and we are concerned by the high numbers of students without hats. As we are a sunsmart school our goal is to keep the students protected from the sun and a hat (& sunscreen) is an integral part of this.
CARE
Almost all students have now achieved their Bronze CARE award with a number of students having achieved their Silver CARE award. We would like to see our students strive to achieve their Silver and Gold CARE awards. For them to achieve this goal, they need to have met the CARE matrix criteria as well as completed 6 challenge tasks, with at least one challenge in each of the 4 CARE areas.
