Mathematics and Statistics Programmes at Oaklands School

Claire Braithwaite —

This week we are going to unpack the Numeracy Framework which the Number and Algebra components of our Mathematics and Statistics Programme are based on.

The Numeracy Framework is divided into  8 Numeracy Stages:

  • Each Numeracy Stage highlights key knowledge and strategy that a child should know.
  • Strong knowledge is essential for students to broaden their strategies across a full range of numbers.
  • The knowledge section describes the key items of knowledge that students need to learn
  • The strategy section describes the mental processes students use to estimate answers and solve operational problems with numbers.

The Knowledge domains are:

  • Number Identification, Number Sequence and Order, Grouping and Place Value, Basic Facts

The Strategy domains are:

  • Addition and Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Fraction and Proportions

The Numeracy Stages are:

Stage 0: Emergent -  The child can not consistently count a collection of objects.

Stage 1: One to One Counting - The child can count a set of objects up to ten but can’t join and separate sets like 4 + 3 =

Stage 2:  Count From One on Materials - The child solves the problem by using their fingers or other materials and counts from one.

Stage 3:  Count From One By Imaging - The child counts all the objects from one by imaging visual patterns of the objects in their mind.

Stage 4:  Advanced Counting - The child uses counting on or counting back to solve simple addition or subtraction tasks.

Stage 5:  Early Part Whole - The child uses simple strategies to solve addition and subtraction problems mentally.

Stage 6:  Advanced Part Whole - The child can select from a wide range of strategies to solve various addition and subtraction problems mentally.

Stage 7: Advanced Multiplicative - The child can select from a wide range of strategies to solve various multiplication and division problems mentally.

Stage 8: Advanced Proportional - The child can select from a wide range of strategies to solve challenging problems involving decimals, fractions percentages and ratios.

Oaklands Numeracy Expectations for the Stages:

As your child progresses through from Year 1 to 8 they will work through the 8 Numeracy Stages.  At Oaklands our Numeracy Expectations of achievement are:

By the end of …                                      Strategy Level

Year 8                                                             Middle/End Stage 7

Year 7                                                             Beginning/Middle Stage 7

Year 6                                                             Middle/End Stage 6

Year 5                                                             Beginning/Middle Stage 6

Year 4                                                             Middle/End Stage 5

Year 3                                                             Beginning/Middle Stage 5

Year 2                                                             Stage 4

Year 1                                                            Stage 2/3
