Food for Thought
It's a start at creating healthy students for a healthy future!
SB and LM have had their 3 sessions of Food for Thought. BB will be having their 3 lesson later in the term.
The programme has consisted of:
- classroom sessions with a Nutritionist learning about healthy eating, label reading and sugar content in drinks.
- supermarket visit to Halswell New World focusing on our new knowledge of reading food labels.
- free Food for Thought lunch box for each student.
- sponsored Healthy Lunch - each whanau class will receive a $60 voucher to spend on food for a healthy lunch. We will arrange a Hub shared lunch once all 3 classes have had their sessions. Watch this space!
Student Voice
Matthew - Something I learned was how to read the back of food products. I was surprised by how some of the breads that look healthy weren't. Something I enjoyed was going around the supermarket and looking for healthy food choices. I’d like to learn more about how much energy for food we should be getting a day from food.
Hannah - Something I learned was that there are good fats and bad fats. The fats you get from nuts and seeds are good fat. I was surprised that when we checked to see if corn flakes were healthy they ended up not being very healthy. Something I enjoyed going to the supermarket and finding healthy and unhealthy foods from different sections. I would like to learn more about foods that are healthy and you can have everyday.
Caitlyn - I have learned the 5 things that need to be in foods if you want to eat them everyday. The 5 things are, it needs to have less than 10grams of sugar and fat unless healthy(like avocado), less than 400g of sodium and more than five grams of fibre. I was surprised by: I was surprised by how much sugar is in coco pops, there is 36.2grams of sugar in it. Something I enjoyed was going to the supermarket and being able to try and find a healthy food for each category to eat every day. I’d like to learn more about how much fat should you have for 1 serving for dinner?
Morgan - Something I learned was how to read the back of food products and the amount of sugar in drinks. I was surprised by how much sugar was actually in drinks and how difficult it is to find healthy things that people like. Something I enjoyed was finding healthy and unhealthy things by reading to packets and looking at the colours of food then listing as many as we can. I’d like to learn more about healthy things we can put in lunch boxes that are also yummy.
