Year 7/8 Hub Update
It is hard to believe, but we are almost at the end of Term 2 already!
They say time flies when you are having fun. We have obviously been having a bit of fun in the Year 7/8 hub because the Term has flown by. A few bits of info in preparation for wrapping the term.
Student Led conferences & Learner Portfolios:
Well done to all students who presented a conference this week. It was great to hear you sharing your learning with your families. We are very proud of you all. If you did not manage to have a student lead conference with your child we encourage you to ask them to share their Learner Portfolio with you. This has a comprehensive summary of their learning to date. Learner Portfolios are living documents and there are a few final additions that will be made to these before the end of the term. Please ask your child to share theirs wth you.
Literacy:
We are in the process of wrapping up our second round of novel study/ It has been pleasing to see many students responding to the challenge of thinking more deeply about what they have read. For the last week of term we will be doing movie study on 'The Lorax.' As many of you will be aware, The Lorax speaks for the trees. This will be fun link in with the sustainability learning that we have done this term.
In writing we will continue to focus on our unit of Real World Writing. This sees us giving students authentic, real world reasons to write. Topics include email etiquette, Trademe listings, instructions and Job applications.
Maths:
In Maths we will continue to focus on strategy learning. Students are working on developing their number strategies at their particular level. We are pleased with how most are progressing. We will also finish off the term with a few fun sessions of small group problem solving. This has been popular this term and we are keen to finish this off on a high note.
Integrated Learning:
We are well into the taking stage of our sustainability inquiry. Students are taking action to help reduce the impact of environmental issues that are negatively affecting our Earth. Watch this space. There are some change makers in our midst.
Technology:
This will continue each Tuesday as normal for the rest of the year. On my travels around the Tech classrooms today I had the pleasure of seeing students busy and engaged making hair scrunchies, cushions, wheat bags, toys for siblings, speaker boxes and chicken sushi. I also saw students coding games and learning about North and South polarity in magnets. The Tech rooms are a hive of activity an it is great to see everyone so engaged.
Te Reo Maori:
We have been focussing on Te Huarere (The Weather.) Each of the students has put together a short weather report for 4 different centres in NZ. Here are some links to some great examples.
Students will be sharing their weather reports in small groups this week. Challenge your child to share their weather sentences with you at at home.
High School Applications:
Our Year 8 students are well into this now. Most of the school request additional information from us, over and above what you put in your application. If you do require extra information for an application, please let us know as far in advance as possible.
Basketball:
The final game for the term is this Friday ( 28 June.) There is no game in the last week of term. Basketball will pick up again on the first Friday of Term 3. Draws will be sent out when they are finalised.
Koru Games Preparation:
This will continue each week on a Tuesday afternoon from 1:45 - 2:45pm.
Upcoming Dates of importance:
Friday 5 July. Celebration of Learning Assembly in the hall at 1:30pm. A chance to celebrate all that we have done this term. Kapa Haka and Choir will be performing at this event.
School grounds during school holidays:
Please note that the school grounds will be completely shut during the upcoming holidays due to construction work.
