Cantamaths 2018
Fast and frantic Maths problem solving was the order of the day at Cantamaths this year.
On Wednesday 22 August, 8 of our top Maths brains represented Oaklands School at the 2018 Cantamaths event at Horncastle Arena .
Our year 7 team was made up of Hannah Wallace, Xiyi Zhang, Marcus Anderson and Caleb Mears while our Year 8 was comprised of Charlotte Koers, Dabok Kwon, Noah King and Daniel James.
Cantamaths involves teams of 4 students competing against other teams in a bid to be the first team to successfully solve 20 high level Maths problems in half an hour. Each team has a runner who runs team answers up to the judges. A correct answer results in the next question being given to the team. Teams may pass on questions but this does limit their potential overall score.
The two Oaklands Teams competed fiercely and while they did not take out any of the top spots, they can be very proud of their achievements. Read below to see what the students thought of the event.
Hannah - I really enjoyed the Cantamaths competition. I had lots of fun. The question were really hard but alogether it was an enjoyable experience.
Marcus - It was a thrilling competition, the questions were challenging and tested our limits, altogether we had an enjoyable experience and I hope to try it again next year.
Charlotte - I think that Cantamaths is a great experience because we got to learn more math strategies and learn to work with different people. I enjoyed Cantamaths because I think our team worked well together and we were good sports towards the other teams who won.
