Miniball Basketball 2022
This term Oaklands entered a team in the Pioneer Basketball term 4 miniball competition.
Basketball is a very popular sport at Oaklands, with many students involved in the Pioneer Basketball competitions, as well as many students who attend the skills sessions they offer.
This term we entered a year 4 team into the term 4 miniball competition. Miniball is a modified version of regular 5v5 basketball. For a start, it is 4 v 4 which allows more hands on the ball for players. Students wear a coloured wrist band as does the opposition. You can only defend on the person with the same coloured wristband.
The aim of miniball is to introduce organised basketball to interested students in a friendly, encouraging way, sowing the seeds of interest for Yr 5-8 basketball.
The team, Oaklands Heat, consisted of: Lucy Robertson, Lucy Trevathan, Clyde Brew, Beau Hedges, Archer Hickling, Lachlan Dunn, Dada Xue, and Nate Gilmour (who unfortunately broke is arm early in the season).
The amazing Jessie Braithwaite and Grace Brew (Yr 7 students) coached and managed the team, running trainings at school and running the subs bench on the night. They are outstanding examples of motivated, kind and caring students who themselves started out in miniball.
A big thank you also goes out to Roseanne who was there alongside the girls, encouraging and providing guidance.
The improvements in confidence and skill levels from the start to the last game were significant, and the players of the Oakands Heat can be very proud of their development and positive attitude.
Bring on year 5/6 basketball in 2023.
