Week 6 in Review

Shannon King —

This week we have certainly felt Autumn, the weather has begun to feel like four seasons in one day and the temperature is dropping. As it is important for the students to get out and have a run around it is outside play on days when it is not raining. If you would like to pop a jacket into their bags please make sure they are named. We will continue to wear hats until Term 2 which means that even if it is cloudy we still need to be sunsmart.

In Reading, students have been reading a range of different books, decoding words with their teacher and developing their comprehension skills to remember and understand what they have read. Depending on what level your child is reading at they will have a new book each day or a book over a couple of days. If your child is looking for extra books to read, they are welcome to read a book or chapter book from home. We want to develop a passion for reading and develop reading mileage in all children.

In Writing this week we have been working on publishing our first story. The students needed to rewrite their hand washing instructions to be displayed in our learning spaces. When the students had finished publishing their story they had the opportunity to paint their hand for the top of their publishing rather than illustrating their writing. Being able to rewrite their stories with editing is a skill we will continue to develop throughout the year with a range of our stories.

In Mathematics the students are working on developing their strategies using materials, counting on, whiteboards and a range of learning activities. In Mrs King's class we have written our numbers in chalk to jump to a given number, numbers before and after. We have used materials such as teddies and beans to show how we have solved addition and subtraction equations by counting them or hiding them and trying to do it in our head.

In Te Reo Maori we have been looking at our mihi’s. Mrs Griffiths shared her mihi with us and we went through our year 2 mihi which builds on from the year one mihi. These are glued into the students CARE books, if you could help your child fill this out so they can practise at home and in the hub. We will be working on our mihi’s this term, developing our confidence to have a go at sharing with a buddy and with our hub.

In the Arts rotation this week-

Miss Doig's class has been exploring different dance moves and songs. They have been showing each other their best dance moves from jump around, the chicken dance to flossing. They then put their dance moves together and had a dance party!

Mrs King's drama class looked at the story ‘The Three Little Pigs.’ We then worked together to develop our script that we will use when acting this out in the following weeks. We had to think about the sequence of the story, what the pigs were doing and saying, what the wolf was doing and saying and what ending we would use. The students then picked a group to work with and the character they will transform into.

Mrs Griffiths class used crayons to draw the outline of a heart shape. The students needed to think about what shape a heart was, it’s size and position. Next week they will be using water colours to paint over their hearts and see the colours mix and interact with the crayons.
