Kicking off the year with harvesting last years honey!

Last year we started our journey with our new beehive provided by Bee Awesome and they have been fantastic!

We started with preparing our school grounds with some beautiful native plants/ trees as well as bee-friendly plants that were given to us by Bee Awesome. 

The awesome staff at Bee Awesome then took our students for a series of lessons around honey bees in preparation for the incoming hive.

Term 4 rolls around and we have our new beehive, this went from a single box to a 4 tier box over the next 8 weeks.

The students were able to kit up in bee suits and open up the beehive to have a look inside and see how the bees were going.

From there we locked it up for over the summer when we knew they would be busy at work.

This year we finally got the chance to open it up with most of last years Bee Team. They were so excited to see all the hard work that the bees had done over the summer.

Below are some pictures of our students in action harvesting the honey and learning about different things. The bees are really healthy and I am super happy with how we were supported during this process by Bee Awesome and by the school.

This year we will be taking more of an interest in this learning and engaging our students more in the living world.
