Physical Activity Leaders - PALs

Rebecca Pilbrough —

The mission statement created today - Fun! Involvement! Engagement! Movement!

On Wednesday 11th May, 12 Year 7/8 students, attended a PALs training session run by SportCanterbury.
PALs run activities at both break times to encourage students to get active, have fun, get involved and enjoy their time. Activities can be skill or game based.

To begin the session, we looked at who we considered to be a leader and what qualities they possess. We realised, leaders are not those who are always in front of you.

At break time, we were able to use the all terrain turf. That was a novelty and we thought what it would be like if we had one at kura.

The second session was about communicating, listening to others opinions, and mustering the confidence for others to listen and follow instructions.

Groups of students were to organise how to teach a game to others. What skills did you need? After the game was played for a few minutes, how could it be adapted due to the needs of the group. An important skill with being a leader is reflection and this was done after each session.

The third session, was to create a mission statement for the PALs at te Kura o Ōwaka, outlining the leadership qualities you can gain from being a PAL and writing the next steps to support the programme at Oaklands School.
