Week 5 review and Week 6 preview in Hub 5

Grant Forman —

Welcome to the Hub 5 blog. Read on to see what we got up to this week and what we have planned for week 6.

WEEK 5

Literacy

Students have been working through the writing process of plan - draft - revisit - share as they construct an article about either "A Typical Day at Oaklands School", or "Oaklands School".

We used a planning template called a Hamburger Plan to help us organise our ideas into a coherent plan.

From this we are in the process of developing our ideas into quality paragraphs based on[1] a subtitle, [2] a topic sentence, [3] supporting sentences and [4] - optional - a concluding sentence or opinion.

We are using an online modelling book to help us as we go through the writing process. You can take a look at this modelling book by going to the year 5 online hub and clicking on the 'Writing' tab. Look for " I can create an awesome article"

Mathematics

We concluded our probability unit today with a short post-check.

Students have learned about:

* words to describe the probability of an event occuring

* how to use a tree diagram to show different possibilities ( for example, if you had two coins, what are the possible outcomes when you do a coin toss with both? )

* How to record the probability of something happening as a fraction. For example, There are 6 blue marbles in a bag, 3 red ones and 1 orange marble. What is the probability of pulling out a red marble?

To solve this we look at how many red marbles there are (3) against the total number of marbles (10). So the fraction for red marbles is 3/10. For blue - 6/10, and for orange 1/10.

Integrated Learning

Sumsmart

We have wrapped up our Sunsmart learning. On Tuesday we did a quick review and then tested our understanding doing an online Kahoots quiz.

On Thursday we worked either individually or with a partner to complete a poster that demonstrated our understanding of our Sunsmart sessions. The task was to draw a simple house and include the 4 dimensions of Hāuora -  well being; identify and record your skin type using the guides; and using text and pictures to show your understanding of UV, visible and invisible light.

We will be finishing these off in week 6.

Self-awareness sessions

Students have been collaborating in groups to come up with criteria for how to make the most of their learning time. This includes having the right resources, being in the best place to learn, making sensible choices about who you work with, what to do when you need a short break, and what to do when you are stuck ( in the learning pit).

Arts

On Wednesday afternoon we went to our Arts lesson - visual art, drama or music. We will share some photos of our learning in the next blog.

Te Reo

We continued our rotation with the year 5 and 6 classes today, focusing on being able to communicate about ourselves. This includes being able to do our mihi, asking and answering questions based on the mihi, and increasing our vocabulary

PE

We wrapped up our Games without Equipment unit today. As our focus was on how effective we are at working together with others, we did a reflection activity where we ranked ourselves according to the criteria.

We started this today and will complete it for SML next week.

You can check out the slideshow and reflections here. Please note that there were a few issues with devices so many are not as far along as they would have liked.

Choir

The senior choir met this morning. There are a number of year 5 students involved which is great to see. Choir goes from 8:45 -9:30am on Fridays.

Online Hub

The Year 5 hub have a website which is called the Year 5 Online Hub. This site will contain:

  • Links to modelling books, how to videos and resources.
  • A weekly plan.
  • Links to all of our hub's notices.

We are slowly building up the resources and content for each page on the site.

Please check out the 'Weekly timetable' to see what we will be doing.

Swim Trials

We took a group of 40 year 5,6 and 8 students to Jellie Pool on Thursday to trial for the Oaklands Swim team to compete at the SW Zones swim meet on Tuesday, 20th March at Wharenui Pool. There is a lot of competition for places in the swim team and we are looking forward to taking on the other schools in the South West zone soon.

Week 6

Here is an overview of our learning for the week.

Monday

All three of us are on CRT release on Monday. This means that we will be at school, but out of class for the day. This allows us to spend the day looking at our data and our classroom programmes.
The wonderful, friendly and regular relievers at Oaklands - Mr McAven, Mrs Casey and Mrs McLeod will be in class.

Swimming and Library Times

Tuesday is our swimming day.

It is expected that all students will participate in the swimming sessions as it is part of the PE curriculum. Should your child not be able to participate, could you please confirm this by sending a note to your child's whānau teacher, or you can email them.

The swimming pool is open each lunchtime for Kauri students throughout the week.

Library --> We have made a change to when we go to the library.

Miss McLean's literacy group go Tuesday; Mr Ladbrook's literacy group on Wednesday; and Mr Forman's literacy group on Thursday.

Testing

We will be conducting the PAT maths (covers all areas of maths), STAR (vocabulary and reading), STEP UP (number knowledge, place value, number sequencing and strategies), and asTTle reading (reading a variety of texts and checking comprehension). This data helps us to identify needs and plan learning for students.

Literacy - reading and writing

We continue or focus on the features of articles in reading and apply this to the texts on Oaklands School we are constructing. We aim to have the drafts completed and for students to begin editing and improving their texts.

Maths

We move our focus to;

  • Number (number identification, number sequencing and ordering, grouping and place value)
  • Basic facts (addition / subtraction / multiplication / division)
  • Strategy (addition and subtraction strategies)

We will share what each maths group is learning, plus links to resources, on our Year 5 online hub / maths next week.

PE

We begin our focus on preparing students for the upcoming winter sport programme. Year 5 students are eligible to be selected in a team to travel away from school each Friday afternoon to take on the might of other schools in Christchurch. The sports on offer are football, netball, hockey and rugby.

We aim to give students the best chance to make a team, so we will be out there working on our skills and game understanding.

Passion Project

We introduced the Passion Project to students this morning. A passion project is where a student identifies something they are passionate about, identifies what they want to learn, what resources they need, and how they will show their understanding.

There is a standardised 'Passion Project' Google Presentation template that students must use for each project.

A passion project make take a couple of weeks or a whole term.  Popular areas for projects in the past have included science, history, the Arts (visual art, music, dance), cooking, the animal kingdom, computer coding, sport, careers, family history, learning about other countries and cultures, plus an extensive array of interesting ideas.

REMINDERS:

Hats - The number of students who have their hat at school each day, and wearing them, is slowly dropping throughout the school. We spoke with students today about the importance of wearing their hat, and we have looked at this in our Sunsmart sessions.

We would really appreciate if you could remind your child about this. A big 'Thank You' to all the wonderful students who have their hat each day.
