Special Events in the Year 7/8 Hub
There are a number of special events/opportunities each year that are open to Year 7/8 students only. We have a few of these coming up this term.
One of the great things about being in the year 7/8 hub is the range of different learning opportunities/events that are available to students.
This term Year 7/8 students will be representing Oaklands at three such events.
CantaMaths is an annual Maths problem solving competition for Year 7 & 8 students. It is an action packed competition with teams of four working against each other and the clock to answer 20 high level problem solving questions. This year the competition will be held at Horncastle Arena on Wednesday 22 August.
Oaklands School will be represented in the Year 7 competition by, Marcus Anderson, Caleb Mears, Xiyi Xhang & Hannah Wallace.
Noah King, Daniel James, Charlotte Koers and Dabok Kwon will represent us in the Year 8 competition.
All of the year 7/8 students have had a focus on Maths problem solving this term, with the CantaMaths teams working on past CantaMaths questions in preparation for the upcoming competition. We wish the teams all the best in the upcoming competition.
Ellesmere Speech contest is an annual public speaking competition for Year 7/8 students. Competition is always fierce with students required to present their point of view, on a topic of their choice, in a 2-3 minute speech.
Oaklands school will send one year 7 and one year 8 to the Ellesmere Speech Contest. All students are currently in the process of drafting a persuasive argument on a topic of their choice. Be sure to ask your child what they have chosen to argue. Students will then present these to the class, with the overall winner from year 7 and year 8 going through the represent Oaklands at the speech contest. This year the speech contest will be held at Lincoln Primary School on Monday 3 September.
Koru Games is an annual multisports tournament for year 7 & 8 students only. This year the Koru Games will run from Tuesday 18 - Thursday 20 September. Oaklands students will be participating in either Netball, Volleyball, Football or Touch Rugby. The Koru Games involves nearly 50 schools and provides a fabulous opportunity for students to interact with other year 7/8 students from all over the South Island. Check out the Koru Games website for more information about this fantastic event, including venues and draws.
There is a real positive energy about the group as we build up to the event. We hold weekly trainings/skills sessions each Tuesday afternoon and it is great to see the students pulling together as teams and learning new skills. Bring on the Games!
