What's happening in the Year 7/8 Hub

Bryan Brown —

Here is some information about the John Parsons Cyber Safety session at Hillmorton, Year 7/8 Leadership Training, New Art Rotation and our timetable for Week 4.

John Parsons

Yesterday, we went to Hillmorton High School to listen to John Parsons who shared with students in the Southwest Zone's information about being safe while online. Here are some students thoughts about the key messages that they took away:

Tanika - Today, I learned that it is important to check the people's accounts before they try to follow you, so you know if they are dangerous or not.

Paige - Today, I learned it is very important not to friend people you don't know, talk to people you don't know and don't tell them about  your personal life.

Ella - Today, I learned it is important to have a friend or close family member with you in your profile photo.

Marshall - I found it interesting because I learned things I didn't know, like people can tell a lot about you from the backgrounds of pictures.

Daniel - Today, I have learned that we should keep our social media private to friends and family and don't accept random strangers that add you on the internet.

Ashton - Today, I learned it is important to always be safe on the internet and don't talk to strangers because they could try and hurt you.

Riley - Today, I learnt that it is important to have photos of your family, friends, sports friends etc on social media, so that people know your strong and loved.

Amber - Today, I learned it is important to post pictures of friends, family and you in your community so people know that you are loved and you have people to go to if you need help.

Ralph - Today, I learned it is important to be aware who you are talking to. You should only accept friend request from people you know from school or family.

Leadership Training

This week, the Year 7/8 Hub completed their second training day in their chosen leadership roles (Assembly Leaders, PAL Leaders, Peer Mediation Leaders and Senior Librarians). This training day was designed in mind to get students to;

  • Use their solution development skills together to solve problems that were arising in their roles
  • Refresh students in the skills they have learned
  • Complete some mock training sessions
  • Clean/re-organise the resources they use
  • Solve any timetable problems that we ocurring
  • Reiterate expectations within their roles

It was a fantastic training day where all students got involved and made a difference in their leadership role at Oaklands School.

Arts Rotation

Today, we will be starting our first session of our Arts Programme. We will be completing learning in Art (MrBrown), Drama (Mr Muller) and Music (Miss Berquist). The units of work that have been designed have all been created with our students needs in mind.

Drama - Improvisation - Students in Mr Muller's whanau room will look at improvisation across a range of different scenarios. They will look at the characteristics and techniques that make improvisation effective and then practice them. Students will then look to use their new knowledge and then apply it to a range of their own scenarios and present their improvisation in front of their peers.

Visual Art - Inspired by Nature - Student's in Mr Brown's whanau room will look into the natural shapes in nature that are used to inspire artworks.  Firstly, students will look into the primary and secondary colours of the colour wheel, followed by the tertiary colours. Students will then research current artists and their artworks for inspiration for their own piece of art. Finally,  students will be exposed to a range of techniques that are used in current painting practice to help them create their own piece of art inspired by nature.

Music - Moving Through the Ages - Students in Miss Berquist's  whanau room will be looking at a variety of music from the 1975 to current contemporary music. Students will explore how music has evolved throughout the decades and see how it served a variety of functions and purposes in people's lives. Students will also apply knowledge of the elements of music, express, develop, and refine musical ideas, using the elements of music and explore instruments and their purposes in music.

Timetable for Week 4

The main event that is happening next week is our Lockdown Training. As per the school newsletter, there will be a letter coming home with information explaining what will be happening. We have allowed time in our timetable from 9am-12pm and when times are finalised we will adjust our timetable to reflect this and then our normal programme will fill any gaps.
