We have had an incredible year of learning in Room 6. It has been a privilege to spend the year with such enthusiastic students. Here are some highlights of the year:

Travis Wetland
We ventured off to Travis Wetlands to see the native wetland habitat as part of our Integrated Learning focus on animals and habitats. We had a great time catching bugs, looking through binoculars and learning about the area. See some photos below. 

Life Education
Harold the Giraffe came to visit us in Term 1 We learnt about the things we need to eat and drink to keep our body healthy. This was part of our focus on healthy choices. 

News Crews
Part of the writing programme in Room 6 has been giving students the opportunity to work in groups to produce an online newspaper in the form of a blog. The News Crews write about things happening at Oaklands, in New Zealand and across the world. 

Miss MacKenzie
The students have loved having Miss MacKenzie as the teacher on Tuesdays while I've been on release. We especially love her passion for art and the time she spends helping everyone achieve their best. Thanks Miss M!

Collaboration
It has been great to involve the students and teachers alike in collaboration across lots of learning areas. We have done interchanges for Integrated Learning, Science, Maths and Drama. We have also joined together for Whanau Hui and Jump Jam throughout the year. 

Year 5 Camp
A definite highlight of the year. We had so much fun learning while being outside the classroom - working in teams, challenging ourselves and engaging in many new opportunities. Highlights included bunking with our friends, the delicious food and the activities: climbing wall, go karts, team building, orienteering, rifle shooting and archery. 

Swimming
In Terms 1 and 4 we have swum as a class in the school pool and learnt survival skills as well as swimming strokes. Our swimming skills were developed further in Term 3 when we had two weeks of lessons at the Starfish Swim School. Everyone improved hugely and earned certificates for their achievements. 

Goldfish
Both a highlight and lowlight of 2016... our class pets were great while they lasted! We'll remember Bubbles, Goldy and Sylvia fondly. 

What fun we had hunting golden tickets around the school, participating in reading and writing activities and dressing up as our favourite book characters! Check out the photo to See Room 6's choices. The week was a great hook for our Literacy learning.
