This term all students in the Year 7/8 Hub got to experience a new sport.

Invented in the Netherlands  by a  Dutch school teacher in 1902, Korfball is a fast growing sport both internationally and here in New Zealand. A combination of Netball of Basketball, it  is played by two teams of eight players , with four female players and four male players in each team. The objective is to throw a ball into a netless basket that is mounted on a 3.5 m high pole.

Players play both attack and defence, changing positions every two baskets. Have a watch of the video attached to this article for more info on the rules of the game.

I liked Korfball because it is something I had never done before and my favourite part was getting a goal in from quite far away. It was quite challenging but I really enjoyed it.

It was interesting and was an easy game to learn. It was also great that you would swap from defender to attacker after every 2 goals. My highlight was getting to defend my friends.

it was really fun because we got to learn a new sport and we got to change positions a lot.

I like Korfball because it was a new game that I learned and it was a game that I had not played before.

I liked doing Korfball because it’s fun and the rules are simple too so it’s easy to play. We had four sessions and I played better every time. I like doing defending because it’s cool trying to get the ball while defending a person.

I enjoyed it but at the same time it was sometimes confusing because the ball moved really fast. It is fun because it isn't too complex and there is a big enough team but not too big and I think it's fair for everyone.It’s kind of like netball but less complex which I like too. Overall it's been a good time in Korfball.

I enjoyed Korfball a lot, it is the best ball game ever that I had played before. The coaches were really patient and kind and they made sure everyone understands the first time when they explained some rules. The best thing about Korfball is that Korfball won’t hurt our knees because in Korfball, even though you can’t move your foot with the ball, you can still move like two steps so you won’t hurt your knees when you suddenly move.

I liked Korfball because of the teamwork and I didn’t like it because some people were ball hogs. I enjoyed competing against other people, and the rules were simple.

It was fun because it was like netball and basketball but in one game and the hoop was really high up so you had throw pretty hard but it was easy anyway. Korfball was really fun.

I enjoyed Korfball, though sometimes I would forget the rules. I really like that it was a team sport, and would play it again. Sometimes they would explain the rules really quickly, and then get straight into it so if you didn’t listen entirely, you wouldn’t know how to play, and would just have to try and learn as you played. I liked attacking better than defending.

I really liked Korfball because it’s kind of like Netball but some of the rules are the same, and some are different. My experience was fun because I really enjoyed it, and it was sometimes had to throw the ball into the net. It is also sometimes hard to pass the ball to the person on your team because people are really good at defending in games.

I thought it was pretty fun learning a new sport that we have never heard of, and having some strange rules like being able to go out the back side of the hoop and you can only mark the same gender. Anyways, overall this was a really cool sport to learn and hopefully we can continue it next year.

I enjoyed my Korfball experience because it was fun getting to do a different sport that I wouldn't normally get to do. I liked getting to be attack and defence because if you just do one position then it can get boring. I liked the huge hoops too.

I enjoyed Korfball this term because it was really fun and it is like netball so I liked it a lot. Everyone was passing and it was always fair. I liked the opportunity to be in any position or role and being able to switch roles. It was really good fitness and we got to run around a lot it was really good to work with a team.

It was really fun playing Korfball because it was something new and different for me. One thing I struggled with was shooting because it was so high up, but we worked as a team.

It was fun and challenging because it was a bit like netball but you were only allowed to mark your own gender. It was also a bit difficult for me because of how big the hoop was.

I liked Korfball because I had never done anything like it. It was also a bit like netball but with no obstruction. I also liked how you played a defence and attack no matter what.The game was also really easy to learn.I liked how only boys mark boys and only girls mark girls.

I enjoyed korfball because it is really fun trying another sport that I didn't even know existed and it was fun learning it too and I really enjoyed playing it.

It has been fun doing this every Tuesday after Tech. It was nice and fun learning a new game and sport. It was fun playing and learning how to play Korfball and also fun playing the game. I really enjoyed playing it because we got to change positions after two goals and I would like to play it again and also consider it as one of my weekly sports.

Korfball is a fun game that is like Netball, I don't enjoy netball so much but the rules of Korfball that Netball doesn’t have makes it a lot more fun.It was also really challenging, but overall fun.

I thought this experience was fun, and it definitely pushed me out of my comfort zone. I am not a sporty person, but I actually enjoyed Korfball more than I thought I would. Korfball is basically a mix of Netball and Basketball, but with a higher net, and some other rules. Overall Korfball was really enjoyable for me, and I would do it again.

I liked Korfball because it was a new sport that was fun to learn it was hard at the start but after every session went by we all got better.

I really enjoyed Korfball this year. I loved the team aspect of the game and enjoyed the coach. It was one of my favorite things I did this year and I hope I can do it again next year.

I really enjoyed playing Korfball because when I started to really get involved people started passing the ball to me more and I also scored a point for my team.

I thought it was quite fun because I had a lot of shots and everyone was passing the ball to me.

One of the best sports I have learned. I personally think I was pretty good at intercepting the ball along with my defence and passing. If I had another chance to play I would definitely take it and play my best.

I liked playing Korfball because it is a new and fun sport. I like the rules that are based around gender and also I like learning new tactics. Korfball is a growing sport and I think that one day it will be very popular.

It was fun because we got to learn a new sport that was cool and interesting. Also I really enjoyed it because the new game was fun and different to learn korfball because it was a mix of netball and basketball. But sometimes I didn't really got a turn because my team would not pass to me and sometimes the teams were not fair.

I really enjoyed Korfball. The thing I enjoyed most was how you only had to mark one person and you were just in one half of the court. The thing that I found the hardest was shooting because the hoop was a lot taller than a basketball hoop so it meant the games weren’t that high scoring.
