KIVA

Margaret Trotter —

Oaklands School has introduced the KIVA programme to support our Restorative Practice Programme.  KIVA is a programme from Finland meaning Kindness.  It is the only antibullying programme in the world that is based on research and has been used in Finland for the last 9 years.  90% of schools in Finland use this programme.

KIVA is an innovative antibullying programme that has been developed using cutting-edge research on bullying and incorporating experiences from previous intervention programmes around the world.  KIVA is specifically designed for the school environment.  It consists of four central features.

1. Versatile, practical material for teachers, students and parents

2.Virtual learning environments utilising computer games and the internet environment

3. Affecting the whole group: Each student's responsibility for the common well-being is emphasised in order to reduce and prevent bullying.  Students who witness bullying are provided with tools to support the victim and to show that they do not condone bullying.

4. Holistic Approach: The methods include both universal and indicated actions.  The universal actions of KIVA are directed at all students and are mainly ones to prevent bullying.  The indicated actions are to be used when a bullying case has occurred. They are targeted specifically to the children and young people who have been involved in bullying as perpetrators or victims.  The aim is to stop bullying from occurring.
