Food For Thought Programme in Hub 5

Trish Patten —

Hub 5 is working through the "Food For Thought" Programme presented by Brittany, who is a nutritionist working with Foodstuffs.

The focus of this programme is to assist children with making healthy food choices through learning about ingredients that are in food and what are good amounts of these to maintain a healthy and balanced diet. They are learning the tricks of reading fool labels. The students were given labels of several commonly eaten foods and learned to read the labelling and record how much of each ingredient was in the product per 100g. They then followed the guidelines for each food type to decide if it was at a healthy level.

They will put this learning to the test on Wednesday by visiting the local supermarket to read food labels and decide on good food choices.

So far they have learned:

  • about foods we should eat every day and those foods we should eat occasionally.
  • about the nutrients found in food like vitamins, fibre, carbohydrates and proteins.
  • that nutrients power our body.
  • there should be less than 10g of fat per 100g in a product.
  • there should be less than 10 g of sugar per 100g in a product.
  • there should be greater than 5g of dietary fibre per 100g in a product.
  • there should be less than 400 mg of salt per 100g in a product.
  • of the food labels we investigated at school Wheat Bix, Natural Muesli and Rolled Oats were the healthiest breakfast cereals to eat.
  • Many of the energy drinks we have way more than the 5g (1 teaspoon) of sugar we should have a day. A bottle of e2 has 19 teaspoons of sugar in it!!!

We visited the supermarket today and had the task of finding and recording and every day and occasional food in these sections of the supermarket in relation to their ingredients:

  • dairy products
  • snack foods
  • breakfast cereals
  • bread
  • muesli bars

We also recorded fruit and vegetables we could see that we green, red, white, purple, brown or yellow.  We certainly learned the names of some new fruit and vegetables.
