Week 8 in Review

Shannon King —

What a great week it has been, hard to believe we are already at the end of week 8! This week as we move back into our instructional lessons of Reading, Writing and Mathematics. As we bring in more of our normal routines we will continue to check in on students' well-being using our self regulation board and skills we have developed over the last two weeks.

In Writing we used the emotional hook of a science experiment to get us engaged and thinking about what to write. On Tuesday we used baking soda and white vinegar to blow a balloon up and can you believe it worked! Check out our stories to find out what happened:

Yesterday we did an experiment. The experiment made air blow up the balloon.

We did an experiment on Tuesday. First Mrs King put the white vinegar in the bottle. Then Mrs King put in the green balloon some baking soda. We watched it. The baking soda and the white vinegar made it bubble. The balloon blew up. It was so cool.

Today Mrs King will show you how to blow while not using your mouth to blow the balloon. First you have 2 teaspoons and put the baking soda in the balloon, and put the white vinegar in the bottle. The white vinegar and the baking soda makes bubbles so put the balloon on top of the bottle. The baking soda and the vinegar also make aire so the air blows the balloon.

On Tuesday we did a experiment. For the experiment we got a balloon and we blew it up and put baking soda in it and it fizzed up and it was really cool and it was fun so fun.

When we put the baking soda the balloon blew up and the next day the balloon fell into the bottle. There was vinegar. In the bottle we used baking soda, vinegar and a balloon for our experiment.

We did a very cool experiment. First when Mrs King put white vinegar into the bottle. Next Mrs King put baking soda into the balloon and Mrs King put the balloon over the bottle. We saw the balloon grow big because the white vinegar and the baking soda went together.

On Monday, we did an AMAZING!!!! experiment. We had the white vinegar, baking soda, a bottle and a balloon. First we put white vinegar into the bottle. Then we poured two teaspoons of baking soda into the balloon. Next Mrs King tied our balloon to the bottle. She squished the baking soda into the bottle and then it bubbled. The first balloon was green then a black balloon. Our green balloon grew so so big! But the black balloon got two times more baking soda. The black balloon it ripped though! But I still liked the experiment! I thought the balloon would explode.

In Reading, students have been reading a range of different books, decoding words with their teacher and developing their comprehension skills to remember and understand what they have read. Depending on what level your child is reading at they will have a new book each day or a book over a couple of days. If your child is looking for extra books to read, they are welcome to read a book or chapter book from home or continue to use Sunshine Online. We want to develop a passion for reading and develop reading mileage in all children.

In Maths, we have been continuing to develop our estimation and explaining skills using different programmes. This is helping the students develop their strategies and abilities to be able to explain how they solved a problem. We are continuing to work on developing our number knowledge and number identification.

Well done to Archer, Alanya and Brieana for making more than four progressions of Maths Whizz this week.

On Thursday, Hugh from Kelly Sport came in to teach us for another lesson of non contact games and to develop ball skills. The students used multi-purpose balls in a range of relays to carry, bounce and kick the ball from one end of the hall to the other. It was great to see them having a go and getting involved in developing their skills. We will continue these sessions each week until the end of Term 2. We can then take these new skills out into the playground and field during our break times.

Reminder - Lucky Books were given out this week, they close on the 12th of June 2020.
