Basketball @ Oaklands

Grant Forman —

A very popular sport here at Oaklands, this year has seen a record number of students involved, even with Covid-19 and the restrictions forced on us.

We started off the year in term 1 with one year 4 miniball team. This team played in the B grade, and did very well. Fast forward to term 4, and the Warriors, as they are known, faced off in the playoff for 1st and 2nd in the Miniball A grade competition, going down to the local Halswell team.

They are talented and capable group of players who love their basketball, and we look forward in anticipation for 2021 and the heights they can achieve.

The regular term 2 and 3 Yr 5-8 competition did not quite pan out as was expected. Covid-19 put an end to a 'regular' season. A revised short 4-week format of 3 x 3 basketball towards the end of term 2 proved very popular with students, and was a great way to get back into the game and develop skills. 7 teams represented Oaklands.

Term 3 saw the return to regular 5 x 5 basketball, and Oaklands fielded 6 Yr 5/6 teams, and 4 Yr 7/8 teams.

It was great to see a number of parents become involved with managing teams or being courtside to run the scoreboard. This was very much appreciated, and we do hope you are keen to be involved in 2021.

Term 4 saw the return of Miniball, with the Yr 4 Warriors playing outstanding basketball to make the final of the A grade - something we have not achieved before.

We also had two year 3 development teams entered, a girls' team and a boys' team run by the wonderful Shontelle and Claire, respectively. We look forward to having them back again in term 1 as year 4s with that season of basketball experience under their belt.

As always, the players could not play without their wonderful families providing transport and the all important support and cheering, so on behalf of the players, thanks very much - it is appreciated.

Looking forward to basketball in 2021,

Take care and have a safe and relaxing break

Grant
