Keeping Ourselves Safe!

Rebecca Pilbrough —

For our Integrated Topic this term, the big idea is personal responsibility and choices.

At the moment we are looking at how to keep ourselves sun safe and whilst experiencing an earthquake.

Last Thursday, we took part in New Zealand Shake Out. We listened to the emergency bell and then followed the instructions. The children were excellent in stopping, dropping and holding, just like a turtle! When it was all clear we went to the courts for a roll call just like in an emergency.
Each child was given a 'What's the Plan Stan? resource produced by the Ministry of Civil Defence to take home. Some of the children completed the challenges and were awarded with a prize.

Oaklands School is a Sun Safe school and how do we keep sun safe?
To help us remember we have made informative posters with strong messages. We listened to a story called George the Sun Safe Superstar (making links to Literacy Week with the theme of Heroes.) There is a catchy sun safe song called You gotta be sun safe by Jay Lagaia which we want to keep singing!

We have explored poetry and have written acrostic poems with our thoughts and ideas with the theme of sun safety.

We have been learning about speech marks and speech bubbles. The children looked through the eyes of an animal and made a poster to keep them sun safe.

At the Cutting Space, there have been two activities with this theme. One was to pack your suitcase with the items to keep you sun safe and the other was to dress the boy/girl so they will be safe in the sun,

The children know to wear a hat when out to play and we have sunscreen in the class for them to put on before they go out. Well done for remembering!!
