Sunsmart Policy-Sun Hats

Margaret Trotter —

At the beginning of the year all classes discussed the importance of sun hats as part of our sunsmart programme. Recently staff identified that we have had an increase of students not bringing their sun hats to school. We do not have enough shade areas for these students to be out of the sun during our breaks. We have therefore had to provide supervision in the hall for students who do not have hats to ensure they are protected from the sun.

We ask you for your support by checking that your child has a hat and it is named.   Teachers will continue to remind students every day to wear their hats as we continue to monitor our sunsmart policy.

The Cancer Society of New Zealand runs the SunSmart Schools Programme. The programme provides information for students, teachers and parents on how to:

  • be SunSmart
  • reduce children’s exposure to UV radiation
  • reduce the risk of developing skin cancer
  • make your school a safe place for students and the whole school community.
