The role of the Pastoral Care teacher

Caroline Martin —

Your child has been allocated a pastoral care teacher for 2022 and although this teacher will be your key contact person, your child will be working with all members of the teaching team throughout the day.

Our learning spaces have been designed to foster collaboration and develop strong relationships between students and teachers. Throughout the day all students will have opportunities to interact with each other, either in group sessions with a teacher for literacy or mathematics, eating together during read and feed, engaging in learning tasks throughout the hub or taking part in activities outside the classroom.

Although students have been allocated a pastoral care teacher there will be very few times during the day when they will work with this group in isolation. All learning spaces are open, allowing students to interact with each other. Each learning space has small rooms that can be used to support students who are not in the green zone (ready for learning). These small rooms provide a quiet space for students to get one on one support from a teacher, practice strategies to calm the brain, reflect on behaviour or positively deal with emotions.

If you have any questions about your child's learning team for 2022 please do not hesitate to contact me. My email address is caroline.martin@oaklands.school.nz or you can reach me through the school office.
